North Australian Insurance Brokers is a Northern Territory owned and operated business with a history dating back to 1988 when the company was first founded. Today NAIB is a corporate representative of the Master Builders Association owned MBA Insurance Services (MBAIS). MBAIS provide Insurance Broking and Risk Management Services to the Building and Construction Industry and have operated in Australia for almost 25 years, currently employing 58 people.

North Australian Insurance Brokers has a unique offering with a small but dedicated and highly skilled team of service professionals. Our expertise, combined with MBAIS and the greater Master Builders Association movement, provides for a significant depth of resources with respect to insurance and risk advice for companies operating in a wide variety of industries.

In the Northern Territory, we not only specialise in the construction industry but because of our broad range of experience we are able to deal with all industries. Our people have first hand experience with some of the largest and most diversified businesses in the Northern Territory.

Our People

General Manager: Karl Tester

Work History:
Karl Tester has worked in the insurance industry in the Northern Territory for over 30 years. Commencing his career in 1987, Karl was quickly promoted through the ranks to eventually become the Northern Territory State Executive of a global insurance broking company.
As a Senior Client Service Executive and State Manager, Karl Tester has handled some of the biggest private insurance programs arranged in the Northern Territory and brings a tremendous amount of expertise and technical skill to North Australian Insurance Brokers.

  • In 1998 Karl won the prestigious National Warren Tickle Trophy Award for outstanding performance judged on three criteria, i.e. (1) Professional Standing, (2) Academic Qualifications and (3) Underwriter and Client References.

Technical Resource: Richard Grounds

MBA Insurance Services – National Technical Services Manager

Richard is a 30 year professional of the general insurance industry with which we consult on a weekly basis or more regularly if required. Prior to commencing in insurance, Richard was an industrial engineer who came into insurance after completing the first ‘kan ban’ manufacturing plant in Australia. He also has a double major in business and is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Finance and Insurance Institute.

Richard has worked at a number of Insurers including NZI (now CGU) American International Underwriters, Australian International Insurance and Lumley. Throughout all of these companies Richard has always been a Construction, Energy, Engineering and Builders Warranty specialist. He has been the lead construction underwriter on most of the recent infrastructure projects around Australia including Docklands Stadium, Melbourne Citi Link, Q1Gold Coast, Australian Magnesium, Star Casino, Brisbane to Airport rail Link, Sydney Airport Link, Cross City tunnel with value of projects over $26 billion.

He has also links with most of the major construction underwriters and reinsurers in Australia, USA and Europe. He also had the opportunity to combine two of Australia’s leading home warranty companies being Australian Home Warranty and Lumley into best practice with online distribution and claims handling.

He is a also proven executive in handling and helping distressed builders.

He is commonly referred to as ‘the industry expert’ and his knowledge is invaluable in helping us obtain the best possible coverage for our clients.

MBA Insurance Services Chief Executive Officer: Luke Hueston

Work History:Luke Hueston
Luke Hueston joined MBA Insurance Services in September 2010 as State Manager Victoria, and in August 2014 relocated to Sydney to take up the role of State Manager New South Wales.

He was appointed as CEO of MBAIS in January 2017.

Luke has been an insurance professional for 14 years and has experience in developing tailored insurance facilities for large memberships and associations. With a product development focus, Luke is tasked with delivering new insurance packages to fit the needs of the MBA membership base.

Luke has a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) and is a Qualified Practicing Insurance Broker through the National Insurance Brokers Association.
